An introduction to the
Ashtanga Primary Series and guided meditation in the authentic Yoga Darshana Tradition of Patanjali
Ashtanga Primary Series and guided meditation in the authentic Yoga Darshana Tradition of Patanjali
Date: Next date TBC
Venue: Havering College, Ardleigh Green campus
Cost: £30
This style of yoga follows a precise sequence of postures, linked together with vinyasa sequences. It is the first Yoga system an Ashtangi-Yogi will learn for their daily yoga practice. It was originally taught by the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India. The Sanskrit name for the primary series is yoga chikitsa, which can be interpreted as “yoga therapy.” It is given this name because it is said to purify and heal the body.
On this workshop students will get the opportunity to learn a modified version of the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series giving you the confidence and tools to integrate this sequence of postures into your daily life. You will experience the traditional Ashtanga opening and closing chants in Sanskrit, broken down with easy to follow handouts and translated into English.
As part of this workshop there will be an opportunity for you to experience a guided mediation in the authentic Yoga Darshana Tradition of Patanjali. Our mental and emotional state is always reflected in the breath. When we observe the breath, we are observing the fluctuations of the mind. When we are agitated so is the breath. When we are at peace, so is the breath. Through meditating on the natural breath we strengthen the conscious mind and cultivate its ability to be aware. Without awareness we cannot bring about change. When practiced regularly, these techniques can help to change the way we respond to life’s events and bring balance and harmony to the mind.
Review from last Ashtanga workshop:
Just to say a very big thank you for hosting the Ashtanga Yoga workshop and a big thank you to Ravi. What a wonderful teacher.
I enjoyed every aspect of the workshop – the instruction, the teaching, the chants, the meditation, the philosophy behind the yoga and a wonderful yoga flow sun salutation and poses, which with each repetition I could feel myself bend more fully and respond.
I have always struggled to meditate but found the guidance and experience of this teaching practise helped me to lose myself for a while. I have come home refreshed, relaxed and strengthened.
Thank you so much

Teacher: Ravi O'Reilly
Ravi O’Reilly fell in love with yoga from her first class back in 2000. She has been on a yoga journey ever since. She was originally drawn to the physical benefits that yoga brings and then onto the deeper spiritualty and connection with the mind. As well as practising a variety of styles over the years from Hatha, Bikram, Ashtanga, Vinyasa and Yin Yoga her keen interest in the spiritual discipline and desire to broaden her knowledge and deepen her personal practice, led her onto teacher training. Yoga is now part of everyday life, both physically and spiritually. Ravi is now teaching Ashtanga Yoga where she will guide you safely into and out of postures with a focus on breath and awareness of movement. At the end of each class you will be taught how to relax the body and surrender your mind for a guided meditation in the yoga Darshana tradition of Patanjali.
